Authentic Chana Masala Recipe
This Chana Masala Recipe is an authentic Indian chickpea gravy recipe that's traditionally eaten with fried bread (puri)!

- 1 tbsp avocado oil
- 1 red onion finely diced
- 1 medium tomato finely diced
- 1 inch fresh ginger finely grated
- 2 medium cloves fresh garlic finely grated
- 1½ tsp tamarind paste
- 1 bay leaf
- ½ tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1½ tsp garam masala
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 2¼ cups water
- 1 can white chickpeas or 1¾ cups freshly cooked chickpeas
- ¾ tsp pink salt
Heat the oil with the first 4 ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Keep stirring until the onions start to get soft.
Then add in the rest of the ingredients except the water and chickpeas.
Stir in the spices thoroughly and keep them on the stove for a few minutes, stirring. Then add in the chickpeas and water.
Allow it to come to a boil and then lower the heat and simmer it for 20-30 minutes, or until the water is evaporated and it becomes thicker.
Enjoy warm with rice or naan once it reaches the desired consistency.
