Today we are making a Vegan BLT Sandwich with Homemade Tofu Bacon Recipe! This isn’t your run-of-the-mill bland sandwich with a slather of butter and jam! It’s a smoky, mouth-watering sandwich with homemade strips of bacon (but not real bacon … you’ll see)! But what is a BLT? If you’re not familiar, a BLT traditionally stands for “Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato.” It’s a classic sandwich loved by many for its savory, salty, and fresh flavors. The star of the show is, of course, the bacon – typically crispy and oh-so-delicious. But in this vegan version, we’re giving bacon a plant-based makeover with homemade tofu bacon.

It’s all about reimagining flavors and textures! I mean, the vegan options for bacon are endless. The internet just about has it all! You can find eggplant bacon, coconut bacon, tempeh slices made into smoky tempeh bacon and more. You’ll find that they’re all acting as a base, marinated with liquid smoke, maybe a hint of maple syrup and tons of rich flavors for the ultimate vegan bacon. There’s many options, but today we’re going to go with tofu for a high-protein option!

The beauty of a BLT is in its simplicity. It’s a combination of smoky, salty bacon, crisp lettuce, and juicy tomatoes, all nestled between two slices of bread and slathered with your favorite condiments. This is a sandwich that has multiple flavors and textures, but comes together quite easily with just a few main ingredients. In our vegan twist, we’re going to infuse tofu with a rich, smoky marinade that absorbs into the extra firm tofu before it’s air-fried!

Substitutions

Bread: Check the ingredient label for a brand of bread that doesn’t contain eggs or milk (any animal products). You can use any type of bread you prefer! Plain white bread is the most commonly used type for a BLT, but I prefer to use a whole wheat seeded bread.

Mayo: Hellmann’s brand now makes vegan mayo, which you can find at some grocery stores. However, you can also make your own using this recipe and a can of chickpeas (we use aquafaba, chickpea water for this homemade recipe)!

Tomato & Lettuce: BLT sandwiches use tomato and lettuce as part of the sandwich base, so do not substitute these. However, to add an extra crunch you can add some cucumbers, pickles or other veggies for more flavor! Use fresh, ripe tomatoes that are firm to the touch – they shouldn’t be too watery or soft when cutting them.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 slices sandwich bread
  • 2 tbsp vegan mayo see "substitutions" section above
  • 8 pieces tofu bacon see "more recipes" section above
  • 2 large pieces lettuce
  • ½ medium tomato cut into medium-thick slices

Instructions
 

  • Make sure all your veggies are cleaned and cut as per the ingredients list.
  • Toast the bread slices until crispy.
  • Layer 1 tbsp of the mayo on both slices of bread, followed by lettuce, tomato and vegan bacon slices on one side.
  • Place the other slice of bread on top.
  • Cut in half and enjoy the sandwich!
