The basic recipe for this easy air fryer snack went viral on Tiktok during the lockdown, for good reason – it’s genius. Air fry pasta turned into crispy perfection? Yes please! My air fryer’s been used for only potato chips or french fries, so this new recipe is a great way to use up leftover pasta or try something new when you don’t want a traditional pasta recipe.

Aside from putting these chips in the air fryer with seasonings, I made a vegan parmesan coating for them. This was absolutely delicious, and then used marinara sauce for the dipping! Plus, using the air fryer means you don’t use as much oil frying these. You can also easily make these gluten-free – I even used a gluten-free pasta myself when making these. It’s vegan, gluten-free and an easy way to make the perfect snack!

Genius Hack: Using the air fryer method to toast cooked pasta to eat it as something other than pasta – so fun! I love this hack, and it’s one of my favorite snacks to make when I want a satisfying snack, but don’t want to turn on the oven or to cook.

Allergen Free: You can choose gluten-free pasta to make these gluten free! Plus, they are dairy-free, egg-free (as long as you choose pasta made without eggs), soy-free and can be made nut-free by substituting the cashews for pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds. Using these simple ingredients, you can have parmesan and chips ready in no time!

Substitutions

Cashews: Use raw cashews, which have not been salted or roasted. You can also use blanched almonds, or sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds for a nut-free option.

Nutritional Yeast: This is a deactivated yeast powder that has a cheesy taste and contains Vitamin B12 and protein. Do not substitute this powder, as the taste and texture is unique for this recipe.

Italian Seasoning: Use any Italian seasoning brand of choice. This is a mix of dried Italian herbs and spices, such as oregano, basil, rosemary, thyme, marjoram and more. You can also make your own mix at home with these dried herbs and use it in the recipe.

Pasta: Choose any desired type of pasta. To keep it vegan, check the ingredient label for pasta made without eggs and dairy products – most grocery store pasta won’t have milk products, but some may contain eggs.

For a gluten-free version, check the natural or gluten-free foods aisle of the grocery store, and choose a pasta accordingly. I used gluten-free chickpea pasta for this recipe. It was accordion-shaped pasta and was the best shape pasta for dipping. Different pasta shapes such as bow tie pasta, would also make a great dipping option!

Olive Oil: Use another neutral-flavored oil, such as avocado oil instead of olive oil. Refined coconut oil may also work (not virgin or extra-virgin, which smell like coconuts). The consistency of olive or avocado oils are preferable for this recipe, as I find that coconut oil has a thinner consistency when melted.

  • I do not recommend to store these, as the chips may get soggy. They’re best eaten fresh!
  • I used marinara sauce as dipping for these chips, because it complemented the seasoning perfectly! You can try ranch dip, the viral social media feta dip, buffalo sauce, your favorite pasta sauce and more.

Make these Viral Tiktok Air Fryer Pasta Chips with a vegan parmesan coating with Italian seasoning, a unique way to eat pasta as a snack!

Equipment

Ingredients
  

For the Pasta

  • 2 cups dry gluten-free pasta of choice
  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning mix
  • pink salt as needed

For the Vegan Parmesan

  • 3 tbsp raw cashews
  • tsp nutritional yeast
  • 2 pinches pink salt

Instructions
 

  • Measure out the two cups for the dry pasta of choice. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Then cook the pasta according to package directions.
  • Once the pasta has been cooked, drain it of excess water.
  • In a large bowl, coat the pasta with the oil, Italian seasoning and pink salt. Make sure the pasta pieces are all covered with the mixture.
  • Place the coated pasta in a single layer in an air fryer basket. Make sure not to overcrowd it. It may need more than one cycle depending on the size of the tray.
  • Air fry at 350 degrees F for 6 minutes. Stop the air fryer, shake the pasta around, and then air fry for another 6 minutes. Cook times may vary depending on the air fryer, so keep an eye on it past the 10 minute mark. Once it begins to get golden brown, it should be done.
  • While this is air frying, add the vegan parmesan ingredients to a spice grinder. Grind them up until a consistency similar to parmesan cheese is formed.
  • Once the air fryer is complete, add the seasoned pasta chips to a bowl and coat with the parmesan cheese, making sure it evenly coats the pasta.
  • Dip the chips into your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy the chips while they're hot!
