Vegan Oat Flour Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (Gluten-Free)

Today we are making Vegan Oat Flour Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (Gluten-Free)! As a kid (and umm, even as an adult), cookie dough is a food (if it can be called a food, it is the pre-cursor to making chocolate chip cookies) that has my heart. When I was younger, raw flour and eggs didn’t phase me! I would sneak in mouthfuls of frozen cookie dough from the freezer. Or while my mom would make cookies with me (needless to say, not many cookies came out of that dough). It’s just that irresistible flavor and combination of creamed butter, sugar, vanilla and flour, with the little bits of sugary chocolate that does it for me. Anything cookie dough related, I’m in!

So Many Ways to Make Cookie Dough

Over the last few years, healthy cookie dough has been in. Anyone else saw the founder of Deux on Shark Tank, pitching her healthy cookie dough? I tried it and it’s oh-so-good, but the closest stores it’s available at are in the US only. I had to cross the border and go searching through Walmarts and Targets until I found some of their base flavors, but it was totally worth it!

Deux’s popular cookie dough uses a base of oats and nut butters, but aside from an oat-base, healthy cookie dough has been around for some time. For example, another take on the ever-popular eat-it-by-the-spoonful dough flavor uses a chickpea base, where it’s high protein and doesn’t have a strong bean taste because chickpeas are more neutral as compared to other beans.

Even using a base of dates, cashews and almond flour (like these chocolate chip cookie dough energy balls) works amazing. There are so many options to make homemade, delicious cookie dough that’s made of wholesome ingredients!

Inspiration For This Recipe

So this recipe is inspired by a take on all the different ways I’ve come across for a cookie dough recipe. Today, I wanted to make it oat-based because it’s not a fully raw recipe (unlike a dates and nut based one), nor is it made of beans … which might make someone turn their nose up at trying it if I told you it’s made of beans, right? This is made of oats, and we can all get behind an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie dough as being another popular flavor. So it’s perfect if you’re making a healthy dough for the first time at home!

I wanted to make a gluten-free, vegan, healthier recipe that contains less sugar and more fiber than traditional cookie dough. After rounding up all the ingredients and blending, this takes just 15 minutes. It’s perfect when you’re craving a bit of cookie dough, but don’t want to fully make cookies!

Why You’ll Love This Vegan Oat Flour Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

Healthy Nostalgia: Cookie dough is one of those foods that brings back memories of childhood! Ah, the buttery, chocolate-chip-studded, flour-filled dough that I would eat whether it contained raw eggs or not. Now though, there’s healthier (and vegan) ways to make this delicious childhood treat edible for all dietary types!

Substitutions: Sugar

Xylitol: This is a more natural alternative to white sugar. You can also use white sugar, or try monkfruit sweetener.

Brown Sugar: Use light brown sugar, or dark brown sugar as a substitute. Coconut sugar will change the taste and texture.

Substitutions: Butter

Vegan Butter: Melt Organics makes delicious salted vegan butter sticks. This is not referring to a margarine-type spread! Personally, I use these butter sticks linked above in replacement of all the dairy butter in baked goods. You can try using almond butter, tahini or cashew butter instead.

Substitutions: Flour

Oat Flour: This recipe uses oat flour, which you can find pre-made at the grocery store. You can also make your own by blitzing up oats in a spice grinder until a powder forms.

Substitutions: Milk

Oat Milk: Use another neutral, plant-based milk of choice. This can be unsweetened almond milk, cashew milk, macadamia milk, or other. Taste test the milk when it’s cold in the refrigerator. If you enjoy the taste of it plain, then it will be good to use in this recipe. If the taste is too strong (eg. coconut milk from a can) then it’ll give that same flavor to the cookie dough, which we want to avoid.

Substitutions: Vanilla

Vanilla Extract: Choose a high-quality vanilla extract, without additional caramel color or dyes. You can also use pure vanilla flavor, which is non-alcoholic so can’t have the “extract” label. Sometimes I do have to search at a few stores before I can find a good-quality brand of vanilla (I always check the ingredients) but it’s so worth it for the flavor!

I found the Madagascar vanilla flavor linked above (so it was without alcohol) from Simply Organics. The smell is much stronger and the texture is thicker than any vanilla I had ever used before!

Substitutions: Chocolate

Vegan Chocolate Chips: Check the ingredient list to make sure there are no added milk products in the chocolate chips (so they are vegan). For best results, use semisweet chocolate chips. For a slightly more bitter (and lower in sugar) option, use dark chocolate chips. You can even find refined sugar-free chocolate chips in the natural foods aisle of some grocery stores for a refined sugar-free option. For “raw chocolate chips”, try cacao nibs!

Vegan Oat Flour Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Recipe Notes

  • Mix it up by adding some vegan sprinkles to make a funfetti cookie dough, or raisins and cinnamon for an oatmeal raisin flavor instead!
  • Blend up frozen bananas with a hint of maple syrup, vanilla extract and a splash of plant-based milk. Then add in chunks of this cookie dough to make a homemade chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream (or should I say “nice cream,” as the common name banana ice cream is given).
