Thick Oreo Milkshake Recipe Without Ice Cream

Today we are making a Thick Oreo Milkshake Recipe Without Ice Cream! Oreo lovers can agree that these classic cookies are a favorite childhood cookie! The crunchy exterior, the thick and sugary filling and the cookie sleeves that are so easy to scarf down in one go.

Oreo cookies in ice cream, milkshakes and other desserts have become a staple at fast food chains (and even the local ice cream shop), with Oreo McFlurries (thank you McDonalds), Oreo Blizzards (Dairy Queen) and many others.

Although these fast food chains don’t make a vegan version of their Oreo-based desserts, so making one at home is my go-to! This recipe is a healthy version of an Oreo shake, all vegan (dairy-free) and with a lot less sugar than a store-bought milkshake.

Hidden Fruit

There’s also a hidden fruit here – bananas! Frozen bananas make for a thicker milkshake that you may not expect once blended, and they’re the perfect base for this recipe. What better way to cool down during the summer months than with creamy milkshakes (with a serving of fruit) for the whole family?

Why You’ll Love This Thick Oreo Milkshake Recipe Without Ice Cream!

Healthier Oreo Milkshake: This simple recipe is a healthier twist on classic milkshake recipes that are heavy cream or ice cream based / dairy-based. Surprisingly, traditional Oreos are already accidentally vegan (meaning, the original recipe is vegan without it meaning to be), and so we don’t need to find any vegan Oreo substitutes to use here.

Easy to Find Ingredients: There’s only four simple ingredients: Oreos, vanilla, vegan milk and bananas. Using frozen bananas adds so much creaminess to this recipe – it’s also a great way to get in a serving of fruit and use up any ripe bananas!

Substitutions

Bananas: Use fresh, fully ripened bananas that have been peeled and chopped. Then freeze them for 6+ hours or overnight, in a freezer-safe container or Ziploc bag. Do not substitute with another fruit, as bananas provide a creamy texture and the perfect consistency for this recipe due to their low water content. There’s also no ice cubes required for this recipe, because the bananas are already frozen.

Vanilla: The delicate, slightly fruity and floral mixture of tastes with vanilla always adds more flavor to a recipe! Pure vanilla extract works best, without caramel color or dyes. You can omit this if needed.

Oat Milk: Substitute with another plant-based milk, such as almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk or cashew milk. Make sure to use cold milk for this recipe.

For chocolate lovers, use chocolate oat milk. You can change the amount of milk as needed, adding a little more for a thinner shake.

Oreos: Regular Oreos are naturally vegan. This recipe uses full-size, regular stuff Oreos in this recipe. Use gluten-free Oreos for a gluten-free option, which tastes identical to regular Oreos for this milkshake.

If you like Mint Oreos or Golden Oreos, they’re also vegan and can be used in this recipe instead for different flavors.

For a soy-free option, use Oreo Thin Crisps and not regular. In that case, start with 4 Thin Crisps. You may need to use double the amount since they are a lot thinner.

Thick Oreo Milkshake Recipe Without Ice Cream Notes

  • Vegan coconut whipped cream can be found in many grocery stores. Gay Lea brand makes a great vegan coconut-cream-based cool whip!
  • Sprinkle vegan chocolate chips or top on a full Oreo cookie when serving, for extra chocolate flavor on top of the whipped cream.
  • Place Oreos in a Ziploc bag and crush with a rolling pin for the extra cookie topping.
  • Prefer a peanut butter Oreo milkshake? Add a tablespoon of creamy peanut butter into the ingredients before blending!
